Refrigeration systems form the backbone of various industries, such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, and cold chain logistics. To ensure seamless communication, safety, and operational efficiency, international standards have been developed for companies engaged in activities connected to refrigeration systems. In this article, we explore the paramount importance of international standards for companies operating in the field of refrigeration. These standards foster consistent practices, enhance safety protocols, and promote global compatibility, ultimately driving excellence in the industry.

Testing methodologies for refrigerating devices for insulated means of transport - Part 2: Eutectic cooling devices

SIST EN 16440-2:2023

The foremost importance of international standards lies in the realm of safety. Refrigeration systems involve the handling of potentially hazardous substances, high-pressure equipment, and complex processes. International standards provide clear guidelines for safety-related symbols, ensuring that technicians, operators, and maintenance personnel understand the potential risks associated with specific system components or actions. By adhering to such standards as SIST EN 16440-2:2023, companies can create a safe working environment, mitigate hazards, and protect both personnel and valuable assets. This European standard applies to eutectic cooling devices which are intended to be used with insulated transport equipment.

The following applications are covered:

Eutectic cooling devices with or without compressor /condenser unit intended to be installed into insulated means of transport (e.g. lorries, trailers, swap bodies, other transport containers and wagons). Charging of the eutectic elements from the liquid to the solid phase may be performed either by a compressor/condenser unit mounted onto the vehicle or cooled by a stationary direct or indirect system. The eutectic cooling devices are equipped, if relevant, with necessary components for the charging, transmission, cooling and/or with temperature control devices. The eutectic elements can be fitted with or without fans.

• Eutectic cooling devices with independent eutectic elements which have to be charged using external means.

This standard specifies the testing methodologies.

This standard is only applicable for mono-temperature eutectic cooling devices. This standard does not provide any safety requirements. In a globalized marketplace, consistency and efficiency are critical factors for success. International standards establish a uniform language and set of symbols for refrigeration systems, enabling seamless communication among professionals across different countries and cultures. Therefore implementation of the standards can significantly increase the scale of a company’s operation.

International standards are often aligned with regulatory requirements in different jurisdictions. Companies operating in the refrigeration industry must comply with safety, environmental, and energy efficiency regulations imposed by the standards like EN 16440-2:2023. By adhering to international standards, companies can ensure compliance with these regulations, avoid legal issues, and maintain a positive reputation within the industry.

Refrigerating systems and heat pumps - Competence of personnel (ISO 22712:2023)

SIST EN ISO 22712:2023

Refrigeration systems are often designed and implemented by multinational companies or used across international supply chains. International standards for refrigeration systems such as SIST EN ISO 22712:2023 ensure global compatibility and interoperability.

This European Standard defines the activities related to refrigerating circuits and the associated competence profiles and establishes procedures for assessing the competence of persons who carry out these activities.

NOTE As a refrigerating circuit is considered not to incorporate electrical and electronic systems, activities in this area are not part of this standard. For competences on electrical and electronic systems, it is recommended to refer to national regulations or appropriate European or national standards. This European Standard does not apply to persons carrying out work on self contained refrigerating systems as defined in EN 378-1 from the initial design of the product to the complete manufacture of the product, provided the process is controlled and the methods used are checked by an organisation or individual, responsible for the compliance with statutory requirements on health, safety and environment.

By adopting these standards, companies can ensure that their systems can seamlessly integrate with equipment, software, and components from different manufacturers and regions. This compatibility reduces operational challenges, simplifies maintenance, and enables smoother collaboration among stakeholders.

Air conditioners and liquid chilling packages with evaporatively cooled condenser and with electrically driven compressors for space cooling - Terms, definitions, test conditions, test methods and requirements

SIST EN 15218:2023

The use of international standards in the refrigeration industry simplifies training processes and skill development. New employees can quickly grasp the standardized symbols and their meanings, accelerating their learning curve and reducing the time required for onboarding with the help of the standards such as SIST EN 15218:2023.

This document specifies the terms, definitions, test conditions, test methods and requirements for rating the performance of air conditioners and liquid chilling packages, with electrically driven compressors and with evaporatively cooled condenser when used for space cooling. The evaporatively cooled condenser is cooled by air and by the evaporation of external additional water. This additional external water is fed by a specific water supply circuit or by a water tank. This document does not apply to air-to-air and air-to-water air conditioners with a condenser cooled by air and by the evaporation of water condensed on their evaporator.

This document applies to units equipped with a water tank or with a continuous water circuit supply that can also operate without water feeding. However, this document only concerns the testing of these units with water feeding.

This document applies to factory-made units which can be ducted. This document applies to factory-made units of either fixed capacity or variable capacity by any means.

Packaged units, single split and multisplit systems are covered by this document.

With regard to units consisting of several parts, this document applies only to those designed and supplied as a complete package.

For evaporatively cooled condenser units that can also operate in heating mode, their performance in this mode is determined according to EN 14511 (all parts).

Installations used for industrial processes cooling are not within the scope of this document.

This document specifies the conditions for which performance data will be declared for compliance to the Ecodesign Regulation 206/2012 and to the Energy Labelling Regulation 626/2011 of air conditioners with evaporatively cooled condenser in cooling mode.

NOTE All the symbols given in this text can be used regardless of language.

Standardized companies facilitate effective training programs, enabling consistent knowledge transfer and ensuring that employees across different locations or projects are equipped with the necessary skills to operate and maintain refrigeration systems.

The main benefits of implementing international standards

International standards for refrigeration systems are essential for companies operating in this industry. These standards establish a common language, enhance safety protocols, ensure compliance with regulations, promote global compatibility, and drive operational efficiency. By adhering to these standards, companies can create safer work environments, reduce risks, and foster seamless communication among professionals. The use of standardized symbols streamlines training programs, improves interoperability, and facilitates efficient collaboration within the industry. Embracing international standards positions companies as industry leaders, contributing to their reputation, success, and sustainability in an ever-evolving global marketplace.
